Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the chief spokesperson behind the Civil Rights Movement, which fought racial segregation in the United States. He wrote, spoke, marched, and stood up for what he believed in. His call for peace and justice has touched the hearts of Americans. To this day, his voice reverberates through the nation. 

This month is commemorative as we celebrate Martin Luther King Day. It falls on the third Monday of January, closely following his birthday on the 15th. Dr. King met his demise in 1968 after being assassinated. Still, the holiday was only established in 1983 during the Reagan administration, and the US started observing it in 1986.

The holiday commemorates the famous American civil rights leader who dedicated his life to achieving equality for people of all races. It's also an excellent opportunity to learn about history and reflect on Dr. King's timeless lessons. This day, we can educate and advocate for social justice in tangible, concrete ways. The day of service inspires people to address social issues, break down barriers, and work toward Dr. King's vision.

Of course, the best place to celebrate this day is Dr. King's hometown: Atlanta. 

Atlanta History Center offers a weekend event to commemorate the life, work, and legacy of Dr. King. The 33-acre all-inclusive destination will open its doors to the Beloved Community with an array of activities and entertainment for your whole family!

Starting at 10 a.m., guests can enjoy activities and free access to various exhibitions at the Atlanta History Center's Buckhead campus. From kid-friendly activities to the African American Civil War Experience at the Turning Point Exhibition in DuBose Gallery, there will be something for everyone from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The exhibit provides an interactive and immersive experience as it portrays the life of an actual Civil War soldier who volunteered for the United States Colored Troops. This exhibit is recommended for children aged eight and up, with parental discretion advised.

There will also be other activities, such as civil rights-themed trivia, crafts, choir performances, panel discussions, and the Freedom Rider simulations on an authentic 1952 Greyhound bus.

Hot drinks and snacks are available in the Coke Café, as well as refreshments in the Grand Overlook Ballroom. A sensory room and a nursing room will also be available.
